Background

Located in eastern Serbia, the Bor Mine is one of the world’s largest copper reserves, with estimated deposits exceeding 200 million tons. With a mining history spanning more than 100 years, the site remains a key contributor to the regional economy.

Challenges

Operating in a vast and complex environment, including deep underground tunnels and long transport routes, Bor Mine faced several communication issues:

● Unreliable Communication: The complex underground terrain creates numerous signal blind spots, making it challenging for surface dispatchers and underground personnel to maintain seamless communication, which poses serious risks to safety and operational coordination.

● Outdated Infrastructure: The legacy narrowband system relied on limited, aging equipment and lacked the features needed for modern mining operations.

● No Data Security or Traceability: Dispatch instructions and location data were not stored locally, hindering post-incident reviews and analysis.

Solution

Kirisun collaborated with mine operators to deploy a fully customized PTToC KiTalk SMB solution, purpose-built for the mine’s unique environment. The system leverages both underground Wi-Fi and surface 4G to connect over 160 devices, including T60 handheld radios, M50 mobile radios, and T650 smart terminals.

This setup enables real-time communication across all operational zones, ensuring effective coordination between surface control and underground teams.
